While some people believe that rock is dead or that Brazilian music is limited to the most popular styles, national rock and heavy metal bands constantly prove otherwise, despite all the challenges and, unfortunately, lack of support from the local audience.
As part of Wikimetal to build bridges and promote the national scene to the rock and metal community, we bring you another National Pride with bands you need to listen to: Commando, Coastwise , and Macunamassa.
Commando
The band Commando recently released Resistência , an album that, according to the band itself, is about self-discovery while navigating between rock and country rock.
“ Resistance is everywhere; the resistance that holds you back and you have to break it; your resistance against the world and the world's resistance against you; the resistance you have to have to endure all of this. And wherever else you can imagine,” reflects guitarist and vocalist Ique Kardush.
Besides him, the group currently consists of Daniel Dória (guitar), Marcelo Cobaia (bass), and Mateus Cestaro (drums).
Coastwise
The band Coastwise recently released their first singles, "What is Mine" and "Lonely Dream." The band's aim is to combine hard rock with other rock subgenres, in a form of revival.
“Lonely Dreams,” which you can listen to below, “deviates a bit from the pattern where the narrator doesn’t want to wake up from a dream. In fact, he doesn’t want to fall asleep again, because the dreams are lonely, where he can’t be with his loved one, and running from the sunset and wandering the streets seems to be the best solution,” the band explained.
Coastwise consists of Arthur Pagliarini (vocals), Histem Jr. (guitar), Maurício Ramos (bass), and Breno Carlini (drums).
Macunamassa
Hailing from the Zona da Mata Sul region of Pernambuco, Macunamassa recently released their third album, Fissura . According to the band, the work was recorded "as a cry against the sanitary and political chaos of the country."
Macunamassa usually mixes various influences in their sound, such as rock, punk, funk, and metal. In this album, the group opts for a more aggressive and distorted sound. "The album is a cry of 'enough is enough' against this political chaos and disregard for health; it's meant to be an awakening and a punch in the gut for the audience," emphasizes Tomás Azevedo , guitarist and vocalist.
Fissura is a heavy and furious album recorded entirely live in a single take in the studio by Tomás Azevedo (guitar and vocals), Thiago Tardelli (bass) and João Marinho Chinaski (drums).
