It's well known that Brazil is a great source of high-caliber musicians, and this is no different when we talk about Metal. So, why doesn't our Metal scene take off? Why doesn't the scene grow or sustain itself? In my opinion, it's due to a lack of unity within the underground scene.
I know it's not easy, because when dealing with bands, we're dealing with the egos of many people and various characters. But if we want to establish Brazil as a main and obligatory route for major Metal bands, it's necessary for regional scenes to strengthen, so that new promises always emerge from them and these can be showcased as opening acts for major festivals or big shows. This way, there would always be one – or why not several? – representatives of Brazilian Metal on alternative stages to further enhance the events, and not just the usual "big bands".
Well, my thinking is simple: With this type of initiative, fans of "new bands or small bands" would further support established bands for giving them opportunities, always keeping in mind the maxim that nobody is eternal and that one hand washes the other. The process would involve auditions, and not just those "new bands" that are friends with the event producers or who have an acquaintance.
"Strengthen the regional scene, and we will have a structured national scene."
"Strengthen the regional scene, and we will have a structured national scene."
To illustrate, these selection processes for large shows or even national festivals (why not?), would be done by region. For example: every place that has a band festival or that has representatives would elect its band or bands for a regional selection process (no nominations, it would be by voting of a panel, the public, the band's material and capacity), the bands that qualified in the municipal eliminations would play in a larger selection process that would be in a hub city with a better logistical location, so they would perform and in addition to the vote of a panel of people who are involved and understand the Metal scene, the public could also, or rather should, have to vote.
Funding for such events can be requested through a project submitted to the Ministry of Culture (in the case of national events), and municipal cultural incentive laws (funding regional events), which would cover the costs of the selection process and the bands that qualify. New bands wouldn't necessarily earn money; they would gain the chance to open for major events or play at good festivals across Brazil. The most important thing is that they don't need to spend anything beyond their time and energy. Recognition or the much-desired money would come solely from the bands' ability, as they begin to showcase their sound at large events and are discovered by other audiences. What new bands seek most are opportunities to show their music!
Let's start practicing meritocracy within Metal. This would create, or even generate, a rotation of bands across all regions, while simultaneously strengthening the national Metal scene. The principle is always the same: develop locally and change globally; strengthen the regional and municipal scene, and thus we will have a structured national scene. Remember that strengthening the regional or municipal scene doesn't mean preventing other bands from other places from playing in your region; it means always fostering cultural exchange between all regions without distinction of Metal or Rock style.
Is it Metal? Do you want to play? Did you send material? You're in!!!!
Towards a structured national metal scene!!!
