You won't fully understand the film if you watch it in Malaysia

Bohemian Rhapsody suffered massive cuts due to censorship in Malaysia, because of strict laws against homosexuality.

The Queen biography was released this month in Brazil and features Rami Malek as the legendary Freddie Mercury .

Even though the film emphasizes Mercury's relationship with his partner Mary Austin , it appears that Malaysian audiences will not see the complete film. It has been reported that 24 minutes of the film remained in the editing room.

The Malay Mail reported that censors removed a key moment where Mercury explains to Mary Austin that he is bisexual. Another scene showing the band in drag to film the video for "I Want To Break Free" was also removed.

In a Twitter post, a fan explained how they came across the cuts when they sat down to watch the film in a movie theater in the country.

"Regarding watching #BohemianRhapsody in Malaysia: they cut all the scenes with gay content, leaving HUGE PLOT HOLES," he wrote. "I watched it in Malaysia and Singapore and realized you won't understand the film if you watch it in Malaysia.".

Another fan wrote: “In Malaysia, Bohemian Rhapsody is 110 minutes long and rated 18+. In the rest of the world, the film is 134 minutes long and rated PG-12. We are heteronormatizing an already heteronormative film.”

Acts of homosexuality are punishable under Malaysian federal law.
