Lars Ulrich, Bob Rock and James Hetfield

Bob Rock talks about Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield and compares the drummer to Keith Moon

"Its sound is unique and wonderful."

Canadian producer Bob Rock was responsible for some of the best rock and metal albums of the last 30 years, including all of Metallica's work released in the 90s and part of the 2000s.

One of his greatest collaborations with the band was The Black Album , a huge success to this day. According to Bob, Metallica called him to produce the album after hearing the sound he achieved with Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee on Dr. Feelgood.

During an interview, the producer commented on working with both bands and compared the drummer techniques of Tommy and Lars Ulrich: “For me, Tommy as a drummer is a nerve that stays open indefinitely, while Lars is probably closer to Keith Moon (…) Lars Ulrich's drum sound is so unique and wonderful that he becomes sensitive to the music.”

The producer also took the opportunity to talk about the relationship between Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield, the band's vocalist: "It's a marriage and Kirk [Hammett, guitarist] has always been the mediator between them, but James and Lars make the Metallica sound. When they're not in sync, everything changes drastically."
