In a new interview with MetalRadio.gr, British heavy metal vocalist Blaze Bayley , who fronted Iron Maiden for over 20 years, spoke about the lyrical inspiration for his solo song “Pull Yourself Up,” which appears on his latest album, War Within Me .

“When I started, I wasn’t a natural singer, but I loved to sing and wanted to be a singer, so I learned to sing. But in my career, some people said, ‘You can’t sing.’ A family member said, ‘You’ll never be a singer.’ In a review, someone said, ‘You can’t sing,’” he said.

In the second chorus of "Pull Yourself Up," the lyrics, in a free translation, are as follows: "They said I couldn't sing. Come and sing with me.".

“Now I’m a professional heavy metal singer. I used to be in the best heavy metal band in the world, and now I own my own tiny record label, produce my own records, and have thousands of fans who love to hear me sing,” he stated.

Bayley adds, in an inspirational way: “Don’t let them define you by what they say. They are not you.”

Blaze Bayley, 58, born in Birmingham, recorded two studio albums with Iron Maiden: The X Factor in 1995 and Virtual XI in 1998. These albums came before Bruce Dickinson returned to the group.

The albums by the band in which he appeared sold considerably less than the band's previous releases and were their least successful titles in the group's home country since Killers .

Since leaving Iron Maiden in 1999, Bayley has released several albums, including several under the moniker Blaze, and a few more under his own name. He also appeared in 2012 on Wolfsbane Saves The World Wolfsbane 's first album of new material since the group's self-titled 1994 album.

War Within Me was released on April 9th. All songs were written and produced by Blaze and guitarist Christopher Appleton .
