Black Label Society was formed in 1998 by former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde . After releasing his solo album in '96, Wylde joined drummer Phil Ondich and bassist Mike Inez to release what would be their debut album, Sonic Brew . Wylde then called on his friend Nick Catanese as a second guitarist and bassist John De Servio to promote the album on tour.
After their second album, Stronger Than Death , Black Label Society released 1919 Eternal and in that same year, bassist Robert Trujillo joined the band. After a year, Trujillo left to join Metallica , and bassist James LoMenzo was recruited in his place.
On the recordings of the band's first four albums – Sonic Brew , Stronger Than Death , 1919 Eternal , and The Blessed Hellride – Zakk Wylde played all the instruments except the drums.
The band went through several lineup changes, with only Zakk Wylde as a constant member.
