Beyoncé added a cover of The Beatles to the tracklist of her new album, Cowboy Carter (2024), released this Friday, the 29th.
The track from the famous "White Album," 1968, was written by Paul McCartney and received some lyrical contributions from John Lennon . In 2002, McCartney revealed in an interview that the song was inspired by the Black civil rights movement, which took place in the United States between the 1950s and 1970s (via Loudwire ).
“I was in Scotland playing my guitar and I remember that this whole idea of ‘you were just waiting for this moment to come’ was about the struggle of Black people in the southern states, and I was using the symbolism of a blackbird . It’s not really about a black bird with broken wings, it’s a bit more symbolic,” he explained.
Beyoncé's version reinforces the song's original meaning by being included on her new album; the project is the second part of a trilogy of albums that seeks to reclaim Black protagonism in genres where their presence and pioneering spirit have been erased. Listen now:
