Mr. Big is known for the classic ballad "To Be With You," which charmed many hearts and introduced them to the band. One of the group's main characteristics is its virtuosity, always featuring very talented musicians.
The band's classic lineup consists of Eric Martin on vocals, Billy Sheehan on bass, Paul Gilbert on guitar, and Pat Torpey on drums, and they are responsible for the majority of Mr. Big's discography.
Gilbert, however, was away from the band for a period, and from 1999 to 2002, the band invited Richie Kotzen to take over as guitarist. Together, they recorded two albums, Get Over It (2000) and Actual Size (2001). Despite his short time in the band, Kotzen left his mark with his incredible guitar skills and unmistakable voice.
The Kotzen phase in Mr. Big has a somewhat different sound from what the band was used to doing, but still, with great tracks.
Check out below a selection of the best songs from Kotzen's time with Mr. Big.
"Static" - Get Over It
One of the high points of "Static" is Richie Kotzen's vocals which, in a duet with Eric Martin, completely change the song, adding an extra detail and a harmony that embraces the ears.
“Lost In America” – Actual Size
The opening riff of "Lost In America" sets the stage for the song's crescendo, which features Martin's excellent vocals, Kotzen's striking guitar presence, and a solid solo that complements the track.
“Superfantastic” – Get Over It
“Superfantastic” is a ballad that begins with just vocals and guitar, but after the first chorus, the drums and bass kick in and the song takes on a more powerful form. It’s an excellent track, with a great solo. It’s a highlight, not only of the album, but also of Mr. Big’s discography.
“Wake Up” – Actual Size
The track “Wake Up” features some pop elements. Besides good guitar riffs and a melodic solo, it also showcases Pat Torpey's powerful drumming.
“Hole In The Sun” – Get Over It
“Hole In The Sun” has a different feel, with a very groovy style, but then during the chorus, it changes shape, with a greater presence of guitar.
"Shine" - Actual Size
When talking about Richie Kotzen in Mr. Big, it's impossible not to mention "Shine," the most successful song from that period. It's an excellent and very well-executed song. The song doesn't disappoint at any point, with Martin and Kotzen making a great duo on vocals.
“How Does It Feel” - Get Over It
“How Does It Feel” features a touch of keyboards and a catchy chorus. The song follows a similar line to the rest of the album and features a very well-executed solo.
"Arrow" - Actual Size
As is typical of Mr. Big's albums, "Arrow" is a beautiful ballad, with a guitar solo that perfectly complements the melody.
“Dancin' With My Devils” – Get Over It
In “Dancin' With My Devils,” the album is already heading towards its end. It features powerful drums, coupled with a good guitar riff and solo, as well as Billy Sheehan's solid bass lines.
“Suffocation” – Actual Size
Although it sounds a bit out of place in relation to the rest of the album and perhaps would fit better on Get Over It , this doesn't make "Suffocation" a bad song. Quite the contrary, the track features Kotzen and Martin singing together, with the guitarist showcasing his vocal prowess, giving the song a unique quality.
