A featured artist at the Best of Blues and Rock 2023 festival, singer Day Limns has been investing in rock music in a new phase of her career and is betting on changing aspects that need to be left behind in the genre.
Originally from Goiânia, the artist became known for making covers on YouTube and for participating in the reality show The Voice Brasil, where she was a finalist on Lulu Santos in 2017.
Following her participation in the program, the singer-songwriter began her career with a greater focus on pop music, and this continued in the first two EPs of her discography, a period in which she also wrote and collaborated with major national names, from Vitão and Luisa Sonza to Anitta .
Formerly known simply as DAY , the artist changed her name to Day Limns after discovering that someone else was already using that stage name. Another change is her visual style and sound with the arrival of her first album, Welcome to the Club , which navigates between pop, emo, punk rock and presents a completely rock n' roll aesthetic.
The artist discovered the genre in a "very pop" way, as she told Glamour in 2022. As a child, she fell in love with Avril Lavigne and delved deeper into the style over time.
The artist is aware of the difficulties of being a woman trying to break into the rock scene, but she already feels welcomed – and certainly being selected for the Best of Blues and Rock alongside big names in national and international rock, from Ira! to Tom Morello and Buddy Guy , is a sign of that acceptance.
“Being a woman in the industry is already difficult, and even more so being LGBTQIA+. They put you in a box (…) and then, you still decide to sing rock, which even though it’s a genre in reconstruction, and on the rise at the moment, is still a niche, and there’s still a certain resistance,” assesses Day Limns.
“It’s been quite a journey, challenging. But I like challenges. And it’s really funny because I’ve always seen myself as a rock artist, in my attitude, my clothes, the way I carry myself, but the sound has become more prominent in my music in the last two years. So, it’s been really cool to have this recognition in this way. It’s been new for me, but I confess that in rock I’ve felt much more welcomed than in pop.”.
The Best of Blues and Rock festival takes place on June 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, 2023, at Parque Ibirapuera in São Paulo. This edition will have new ticket options – check the Eventim website for details .
