Councilwoman Dr. Michelly Siqueira (PRD) presented Bill 144/2025 , which proposes the creation of "Heavy Metal Day," to be celebrated every November 1st on the city's official calendar.

Known as the birthplace of iconic bands like Sepultura , Sarcófago , and Overdose , Belo Horizonte has become one of the epicenters of national Heavy Metal, as mentioned in the PL text:

"Belo Horizonte is widely recognized as the birthplace of Brazilian heavy metal, having been the starting point for pioneering bands that marked the national and international scene. In the 1980s, the city saw the emergence of groups like Sepultura , which took the name of Belo Horizonte to the world, becoming one of the most influential bands in the history of metal."

Belo Horizonte not only consolidated its historical importance by revealing bands of the genre to the world, but also maintains a strong influence on the current scene, with bands that continue to stand out internationally. This legacy is highlighted by the councilwoman in the text of the bill, which reinforces the city's relevance in the music circuit:

“Other bands, such as Eminence , also consolidated the local scene and contributed to the diversity and richness of the genre.”

According to the councilwoman, the date would not only be a celebration of the history of Belo Horizonte and Heavy Metal, but also a tribute to musicians, professionals, and fans of the genre.

"This date honors not only the bands that have taken the city's name to the world, but also the musicians, producers, fans, and all those who make heavy metal a living and relevant cultural expression."

Between the late 1980s and early 1990s, the capital of Minas Gerais was buzzing with the Heavy Metal scene, bringing together fans and musicians in front of the legendary Cogumelo Records . The label, responsible for Sepultura's first two albums and historic splits, was a meeting point for the "Metal crowd," establishing itself as a symbol of the genre's golden age in Brazil.

This movement not only strengthened the identity of Brazilian Metal, but also projected bands from Minas Gerais onto the international stage, leaving a legacy that remains alive to this day.
