It was the 1960s, and two great bands emerged and dominated the world. Their dominance was so great that they ended up competing for the same territories and audiences. Manager Andrew Loog Oldham saw the danger the Rolling Stones could face if they didn't challenge the style of the lads from Liverpool, the Beatles.
“He [Oldham] knew that the Stones wouldn’t surpass the Beatles through imitation, so the strategy was to oppose them. Thus, he used disdain and scandal as marketing tools,” state journalists Jim DeRogartis and Greg Kot, authors of the book The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones – The Great Rivalry of Rock 'n' Roll .
Oldham positioned the Stones at the top, alongside the Beatles, but as their opposite. 60 years later, one of those bands is no longer with us, but the success and the rivalry are still with us.
