Vinnie Paul , drummer and co-founder of Pantera , was one of the great icons of heavy metal and, alongside his brother Dimebag Darrell, became a major influence and inspiration for future musicians.
The American drummer passed away in 2018 at the age of 54 from heart problems , reaching 19th place on Loudwire 's 50 best hard rock and metal drummers of all time .
To celebrate the drummer's work, let's remember the four projects Vinnie Paul participated in:
Rebel Meets Rebel
Known as a Pantera parallel, the band only lacked Phil Anselmo. David Allan Coe was the vocalist, alongside the three well-known musicians Dimebag Darrell, Rex Brown , and Vinnie Paul. The project released only one album, Rebel Meets Rebel , in 2006, on Vinnie Paul's label, Big Vin Records , after Dimebag Darrell's murder in 2004.
Damageplan
Formed by brothers Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell, Damageplan emerged after Pantera's hiatus. Lasting just over a year, the project ended at one of the first shows following the release of their first and only album, New Found Power (2004). Nathan Gale , an obsessed fan, fired several shots at Dimebag during the band's show, claiming that the guitarist was to blame for the end of Pantera.
Hellyeah
Formed in 2006, the supergroup featured vocalist Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett from Mudvayne , guitarist Tom Maxwell from Nothingface , bassist Bob Zilla from Damageplan , and drummer Vinnie Paul. With their studio albums, the band debuted in Brazil in 2016 at the Maximus Festival , which marked drummer Vinnie Paul's last visit to Brazil. Currently, Hellyeah is "on hiatus," according to current drummer Roy Mayorga .
Panther
Also founded by brothers Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell, Pantera is the best known and most successful band. They started in 1981 in Texas, the brothers' hometown, initially playing glam metal, but evolved into a heavier, more aggressive style, often called power groove—a mix of thrash metal and groove metal—with the addition of Phil Anselmo in 1986. The band is known for albums such as Cowboys from Hell (1990), Vulgar Display of Power (1992), and Far Beyond Driven (1994).
