AC/DC 's album Back In Black has just achieved another milestone: it has been recognized as the third best-selling album in US history. In July, it received a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for 26 million sales, and now in August it has received a platinum certification for 27 million.
Upon reaching this milestone, AC/DC took the sales spot previously held by the Eagles with their album Hotel California. However, the group remains on the list and in first place with their album, Greatest Hits (1971–1975) , with 38 million sales. Currently in second place is Michael Jackson with the album Thriller , which sold 34 million copies.
In the worldwide sales charts, AC/DC's iconic album is in second place with 50 million sales. It is only surpassed by Thriller, with 70 million.
Forty-four years of "Black In Black"
The album Back In Black was released in 1980 and continues to be a cult classic among new generations. Its release coincided with the year the band's vocalist, Bon Scott, tragically died. Normally, when an established band loses its vocalist, the replacement doesn't please the fans. But that wasn't the case with Brian Johnson in AC/DC.
At the time, the musician was little known in the world, only having recognition in England. But after the audition with the band, he ended up being chosen among other musicians who also participated in auditions.
It was amidst this crisis that the album was released. And to this day it is considered one of the band's best studio recordings. Currently, in celebration of the band's 50-year career, a gold vinyl of Back In Black is available for sale, as are other albums by the band. Furthermore, the band is touring after an eight-year hiatus.
