Avril Lavigne believes Olivia Rodrigo marked the "return of rock n' roll"

18-year-old singer wins 'Songwriter of the Year' award from Variety

Avril Lavigne believes that rock n' roll has returned to the charts with the success of Olivia Rodrigo , an 18-year-old singer who exploded onto the scene with the single "Drivers Licence" and her debut album, Sour , this year.

The pop-punk veteran's statement was part of Avril's acceptance speech for Variety magazine's Songwriter of the Year award . "This year, we met a new artist whose debut album marked a major rock 'n' roll comeback," she began. "Olivia's singles (...) became part of the collective psyche in 2021, and she wrote every single one of them."

Although cited as part of the rock revival, Olivia Rodrigo is part of a new generation of artists betting on pop punk . The sound of the song "Good 4 U" was widely compared to "Misery Business," a hit by Paramore , so much so that the up-and-coming singer credited the band for the composition after several comparisons and even accusations of plagiarism from internet users.
