Anthrax: Still relevant after more than 35 years

Anthrax emerged in 1981.

Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante , who celebrated 35 years in the band in 2016, spoke in an interview with Fargo Monthly about the band's longevity.

“When you’re trying to keep everything together, I would say it’s important that you love what you’re doing. Over the years, we can see other forms of music take shape and become popular. We’re living in a time when the climate is saying that rock is over and that you need to make way for other genres. Everyone is still here and you can see that. Just look at AC/DC or Iron Maiden – they’ve kept their guns and are still relevant; that’s what we are too.”

Benante also spoke about the decision by thrash metal veterans Slayer to retire after completing one last world tour. “For me, being the same age, playing the same form of music, we were considered oddballs,” he said. “We were different and we chose a form of music that you have to love. […] Seeing all this happen to them is really bittersweet.”

Anthrax is touring with Slayer, along with Lamb Of God, Testament , and Behemoth .
