In an interview with Guitar World, Angus Young had shared his opinion about his brother Malcolm Young as a guitarist before the tragic event last Saturday:
“Malcolm is really underrated. He makes the band sound so full, I couldn’t ask for a better rhythm guitarist.”.
Sometimes I watch Malcolm while he's playing and I'm struck by the strength and power of it. He does something much more unique than I do – with his raw and natural sound.
People like Malcolm, Steve Cropper, Chuck Berry, and Keith Richards – they play better than the rest of us. Of course, I can't deny that Eric Clapton and Eddie Van Halen influenced a lot of people, but for me, it's this rhythm thing that's much more impressive and important for the band. Malcolm is a huge inspiration to me; he keeps me grounded.
Even when I'm tired from running around on stage for two hours, I look to see what he's doing and it gives me that energy I need sometimes [Laughs]. And he always tells me if I'm playing well or not. Mal is very critical, and I know that if I can please him, I can please the world.
A lot of people say, 'AC/DC – it's that band with the short guy who runs around in a school uniform.' But I wouldn't be able to do what I do without Malcolm and the other guys rocking out to the beat.
They make me look good in the picture. Malcolm is truly a complete guitarist. I know that 'rhythm guitar' always appears on the back covers of albums, but if he sits down to play a solo, he can do it better than me.
Few people realized this, but in the early days of AC/DC he used to do solos. But then one day he told me: 'No… You do the solos. I'll just rock out back here.' And he doesn't make any noise; he knows how to play, and he knows when not to play.”.
