In February of this year, Angra released their ninth studio album, Ømni . The new work arrived four years after Secret Garden, featuring eleven songs on the tracklist—among which one stood out.
Highly received by fans and critics alike, the album was marked by special guest appearances. On vocals, Fabio Lione (ex- Rhapsody ) returned for his second album with the band, while Kiko Loureiro , a founding member who now plays in Megadeth , participates on one of the tracks.
Ømni would already be a good album as is, but Angra took it a step further and invited two more people to be part of the project. In an unusual collaboration, Alissa White-Gluz and Brazilian singer Sandy lent their vocals to the track "Black Widow's Web".
The song caused confusion, astonishment, and even discontent among some fans, but overall, it was a success, debuting at number one on Spotify's Viral 50 playlist in Brazil. Now, Angra has prepared another surprise: "Black Widow's Web" will have a music video.
A few days ago , the band released a clip of the video, showing Sandy entering a church with a gothic look while the group members appear ready to play. Alissa appears briefly at some points, leaving fans curious to see the final result.
The music video was created by the Brazilian production company Libertà Filmes. Led by Leo Liberti, the company has received numerous awards over the years, including the Latin Grammy, Cannes Film Festival, and Clio Awards, and has worked with major names in music such as Megadeth. Their latest project was the music video for "Lying in State," filmed in São Paulo during the band's last visit to the country in November 2017.
“I always wanted to make a music video for Angra, but I had to do one for Megadeth first. It was the other way around!” Liberti says, “The video is basically about loneliness… The ‘web’ itself is secondary. A refuge. All these themes will be addressed in the video in an artistic and symbolic way.”
Speaking about what it was like working with Sandy, the director confessed to being surprised: “Anyone who thinks Sandy is a girl who wakes up every day, says good morning to the birds, and skips around the house singing is absolutely wrong. From the start, I was apprehensive about being too harsh on the script, but Sandy was super open in our first conversation. And during filming, it was something surprising.”
“I have over 500 credited works as a director, and very rarely have I had the opportunity to work with someone who gave so much of themselves and, in a matter of minutes, managed to immerse themselves and dedicate themselves to something so intense. Sandy is a beautiful plush angel with a dagger inside! Not to mention that she spent almost 10 hours in gigantic heels without complaining!”, he says, laughing.
Liberti also revealed what it was like working with Alissa, which, despite being filmed in Canada, he was responsible for organizing: “I kind of “directed” her from afar (…) There were drawings of shooting plans, lighting positioning, etc. I'm thinking of launching a directing course via Skype!”, he jokes.
The music video should be released soon, and in the meantime, you can check out some behind-the-scenes images from the shoot below.
