Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser spoke in an interview with AMNplify about the themes that inspired the band's new album, "Machine Messiah." The magazine asked the musician if technology is something that truly concerns him:

"Without a doubt. I think that 'Machine Messiah,' instead of being a sci-fi vision of the future, is what we see today: smartphones, computers, Google glasses, chips in our bodies… In many ways, these things are not helping humanity to develop. Instead, robots are doing all these things for us. We are becoming lazier and dumber in a certain sense.".

Listen to “Machine Messiah” on digital platforms.

If you go to a show, for example, you see people filming the show instead of actually enjoying the moment. Filming things they won't even watch later. Families in restaurants with their smartphones don't even talk. Even to meet a woman, you need Tinder. You know, go to a bar and talk to someone. All human interactions are being replaced by these robotic ideas. You lose the real meaning of things. You know, sex is good because you work for it; at least for me. You meet new people, there's feeling and eye contact and all that kind of thing. Now you press a button and you have sex for no reason. It's a very robotic attitude. And it's a concern for all of us, especially for the generation of my children, my grandchildren, and so on.

“Machine Messiah” talks about this and tries to find a balance. It’s not that all technology is bad, but we need the discipline to keep our human skills intact and try to improve them. There are so many frequencies that we don’t understand or connect with. That’s the direction we should be going. In the end, much of the technology is just garbage. Literally, it will end up as garbage that will destroy our environment for centuries to come. Why keep changing from the iPhone 4 to the 5, 6, 7? There seems to be so much stuff that the planet can’t handle. We need a balance.”

Sepultura's new album, "Machine Messiah," was released on January 13th.
