During a conversation with journalist Jarek Szubrycht at the Mystic Festival in Poland, transcribed ( via Blabbermouth ), Andreas Kisser explained the reasons behind Sepultura to announce their farewell tour. Scheduled to end in late 2026, the tour will mark the end of a journey spanning more than 40 years.
According to the guitarist, the timing was chosen because it represents a natural conclusion. He highlighted the band's legacy—which took them from Brazil to perform in nearly 80 countries, bringing Brazilian identity to heavy metal—and commented that the album Quadra (2020) was a worthy way to end their discography. Kisser also mentioned that the pandemic and a profound personal loss —the death of his wife after a long battle with cancer—changed his perspective on life, death, and natural cycles. "Death was my greatest teacher," he reflected.
Andreas acknowledged that he had been feeling pressure to continue composing, but stated that, at this moment, the band preferred to prioritize creative freedom. For him, the hiatus represents a way of respecting Sepultura's history and the dedication required to create a new album.
Post-Grave Plans
Even with the announcement of their breakup, the band still has ambitious plans. A live album is being produced during the tour, with 40 songs recorded in 40 different cities. The goal is to capture the most memorable moments of this final phase, with energy and connection to the audience. In addition, Sepultura intends to visit places where they have never performed before, such as Iceland and African countries, and forge special collaborations.
Kisser described this as the best European tour of the band's career, with enthusiastic audiences, fans who now bring their children to the shows, and a strong sense of gratitude for the legacy they have built. According to him, the audience response has been thrilling.
The post-Sepultura future is already beginning to take shape. Kisser intends to remain involved with music through his side projects, such as the band De La Tierra , his radio show in São Paulo (done alongside his son), and even a possible reggae project with Derrick Green . He has also expressed interest in teaching, producing educational content about guitar, and exploring new creative avenues—far from his comfort zone.
Regarding the possibility of a reunion with Max and Iggor Cavalera at the final show, Kisser seemed receptive and said he hoped they could all be there. For him, it's not about settling scores, but a great celebration for the fans and for the band's own history. "Just get on stage and enjoy," he summarized.
Greyson Nekrutman replaces Eloy Casagrande.
Celebrating Life Through Death tour officially began on March 1, 2024, in Belo Horizonte. The sold-out show marked the debut of drummer Greyson Nekrutman , formerly of Suicidal Tendencies , who replaced Eloy Casagrande . Eloy's departure was announced just days before the start of the tour and surprised the remaining members, as he left the band to join Slipknot .
During the North American leg of the tour, Sepultura is joined by acts such as Obituary , Agnostic Front , and Claustrofobia , in a global celebration of their 40-year career.
Metal Hammer magazine , Derrick also spoke about his future plans. He intends to expand his TV show Highway To Health , work in voice acting, and explore new musical possibilities, including projects outside of metal. Regarding his partnership with Andreas outside of Sepultura, the two joked about contracts, but made it clear that they are open to collaborations. "Ending the band by doing something that sounds like Sepultura would be boring," commented the guitarist.
For Andreas Kisser, the decision to end the band is a way to make room for new experiences: "It's a little scary, but also exciting."
