Andre Matos is one of the biggest names in the history of Brazilian metal. The singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist's musical career began in his youth, when he joined VIPER at just 13 years old.
Alongside his first band, Andre demonstrated all the genius that would establish him as the iconic figure in metal both in the country and abroad, having recorded two historic albums: Soldiers of Sunrise (1987) and Theatre of Fate (1989).
Later, the artist left the band to focus on music school and explore new directions, forming Angra later on, and reuniting with VIPER again in 2012 for the To Live Again Tour, organized to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the album Soldiers of Sunrise .
Here at Wikimetal , we celebrate VIPER's legacy with seven seasons of VIPER Tuesdays : since June 2020, we have been making unreleased and special videos from the band available on our YouTube channel.
With this, we bring you invaluable recordings, many telling the story of the Maestro of Rock alongside the band. In this list, we've selected 5 essential performances to remember Andre Matos' journey with VIPER.
Living For The Night – Live in São Paulo (2012)
Excerpt from the DVD To Live Again – Live in São Paulo . Recorded in 2012, the show featured the complete repertoires of the albums Soldiers of Sunrise and Theatre of Fate . In the show, this was the 13th track on the setlist and featured a special guest appearance by Yves Passarell , guitarist of Capital Inicial and one of the founders of VIPER.
A Cry From The Edge – Back in Black Jack (1990)
A very rare recording of the band shortly after the release of the album Theatre of Fate , when VIPER performed at one of the most traditional venues of the time in São Paulo: Black Jack, in the Santo Amaro neighborhood. The performance is one of the rare shows recorded in its entirety on Fate on Tour with the classic VIPER lineup, since vocalist Andre Matos and drummer Guilherme Martin would leave the band a few months later.
Knights Of Destruction – Dama Xoc (1989)
This was VIPER's last show before entering the studio to record what would become one of the most iconic heavy metal albums in Brazilian history, Theatre Of Fate. The performance took place at Dama Xoc, a traditional concert venue in São Paulo.
Soldiers Of Sunrise – Colégio Rio Branco (1987)
On August 28, 1987, the launch show for the album Soldiers Of Sunrise , the band's debut album, took place. And one detail of the performance stood out: during "Soldier of Sunrise," Andre Matos almost caused a fire when he entered the stage with a torch .
