In a new interview with Loudersound , Amy Lee of Evanescence talked a bit about her quarantine routine and spoke more openly about some personal themes that inspired the album The Bitter Truth , released at the end of March.

Part of the album discusses the band's frustrations with people involved with their former record label, Wind-Up , which is being sued by the singer. A bit of the story can be heard in " Better Without You ." According to Amy Lee, people sometimes get the impression that it all boils down to "a record label that was very mean," but the situation is more delicate than that: "It's about the people around us, the people working with us, representing us. A big cleansing that needed to be done."

The singer also addressed the more emotional side of the album, motivated in part by the tragic loss of her younger brother, Robby, who died in 2018 at the age of 24 after a long battle with severe epilepsy.

“He’s everywhere [on the album],” Amy Lee stated. “Losing someone you love so much really changes a person a lot. It’s not something you heal from, it’s not something you get over. It’s part of you now and you have to learn to live with this new version of yourself. A big part of who I am is being an older sister and having him [Robby] in my life, that’s part of my identity, so I questioned myself, ‘Okay, this part of me doesn’t exist anymore? And if it doesn’t, what does that mean?’”

As part of a cathartic moment, Amy Lee revealed that she listened to the entire album with her parents on Christmas Day, which was an emotional experience, but also something that brought a good feeling. "We shed a few tears," she joked.
