Amy Lee commented on one of the labels most associated with the band throughout their career. In an interview with Metal Hammer, the Evanescence vocalist stated that she never liked seeing the group described as "gothic" and classified the term quite directly.
“Honestly, I never liked that word. I was more of an alternative rock type, with ripped jeans. The word gothic [to describe Evanescence's music] is stupid. I hate that word,” said Amy Lee.
According to the vocalist, the image built around Evanescence in the 2000s – the dark visuals and melancholic elements – didn't always reflect the band's musical direction. The artist recalled that, at the time of the release of "Bring Me To Life" in 2003, she identified much more with the alternative rock scene than with the gothic scene.
Amy Lee also said that she's not exactly a fan of the nu metal label, but that it bothers her less. "I don't think that word is particularly modern, but I don't really care. Labels are labels, call them what you want. We know who we are and our journey is full of incredible growth, but also respect for our origins," she confided.
Evanescence has just released the album Sanctuary, the band's first studio album since The Bitter Truthin 2021. Next week, the band will begin an extensive tour of North America, the UK, and Europe, bringing together one of the strongest lineups in current alternative rock. The band, led by Amy Lee, will be joined by guests Spiritbox, Poppy, Nova Twins , and K. Flay.
