With Evanescence 's return after 10 years without new music, Amy Lee revisited the band's past in interviews and talked more about "Bring Me To Life," the hit that propelled the group to fame.
In an interview with Sonic Seducer , the frontwoman confessed that the track was inspired by her current husband, Josh Hartzler, even before she ended her previous relationship. “There was this moment, I was in a difficult situation and in a bad relationship, and my current husband was just a friend and someone I barely knew at the time,” she recounted (via Blabbermouth ). “It was maybe the third or fourth time we met and we went to find a place at a restaurant while our friends parked their car. We sat across from each other, and he looked at me and just said, ‘So, are you happy?’ That caught me by surprise.”
At that moment, the connection became clear to Amy and inspired the first verses of the song. “I felt a pang in my heart, because I thought I was pretending really well, and someone managed to see through me,” she continued. “That really made me feel and recognize the desire I had to get to a better place and really set me on a journey [to improve].” Besides changing the singer's personal life, now determined to leave the bad relationship behind, that question was the starting point for writing the song that would change everything for Evanescence .
The vocalist also recently revealed that the record label considered including a male vocalist in the band , in an attempt to create a kind of " female Linkin Park " and make the band's sound more "acceptable" on the radio. Unable to change the group's lineup, the alternative was to include a rap in the track. Despite recognizing the importance of this participation in taking the song further commercially, Amy was happy to release the original version of the track in 2017.
