The legendary Finnish metal band Amorphis has just revealed the first sample of their highly anticipated 15th studio album. The track “Light and Shadow” is now available with an official lyric video, marking the beginning of the group's new musical era with an immersive sound that starts with piano and evolves into a powerful and introspective anthem.
Keyboardist Santeri Kallio , responsible for composing the song, commented on the creative process ( transcribed via Blabbermouth ): “I set reason aside and just went with the flow, without worrying about expectations. When I heard Tomi [ Joutsen ]'s final vocals, I realized that this would be the perfect introduction to the album.”
With a release date set for September 26, 2025, Borderland will be released via Reigning Phoenix Music. The production was handled by Jacob Hansen , renowned for his work with major names in metal, at Hansen Studios in Denmark.
The cover art was created by Marald Van Haasteren , a Dutch artist who has previously collaborated with Metallica , Black Sabbath , and Kvelertak , thus ensuring a visual identity worthy of Amorphis' new phase.
With Borderland , Amorphis delves deeper into mythological and existential themes in its lyrics.
Longtime lyricist Pekka Kainulainen returns once again to deliver lyrics laden with symbolism and reflection. He comments: “Our ancestors also faced destruction and death. By honoring mythologies and the band's fans, I tried to convey humility and strength, virtues that have always been essential to humanity.”
Furthermore, this lyrical approach reinforces the album's concept, whose title, Borderland, symbolizes the creative tension between opposing forces, light and shadow, old and new, melody and aggression.
To celebrate this new chapter, Amorphis will embark on an extensive tour, starting with a headline show in Finland. Following that, the band will embark on a European tour alongside Arch Enemy, Eluveitie, and Gatecreeper . The journey begins in Stuttgart , Germany, on October 10, 2025, and promises to bring the sound of Borderland to large arenas across the continent.
