Arch Enemy vocalist
In an interview backstage at the Leyendas Del Rock festival in Spain, Arch Enemy vocalist Alissa White Gluz was asked what advice she would give to a girl who wants to be part of the Heavy Metal scene. Alissa said:
“I would say, ‘don’t doubt yourself.’ Because a lot of people will doubt you. Because you’re a woman, they’ll think you’re just using your beauty, or that you’re not pretty enough to use your beauty, or that you don’t like that kind of music and it’s just a disguise, that the record label put you there, or that you’re dating one of the band members. They’ll always think there’s something there just because you’re a woman. So what I would say is don’t doubt yourself. You know why you’re there.”
Of all the female colleagues I have, all the women I know who are in bands, none of us joined because we're women. We joined because we love music, we love to sing, or play guitar, or play drums, whatever. That's why. And the amount of time I spend thinking about the fact that I'm a woman is zero seconds a day. I don't wake up and think, 'I'm a woman. Let's see what the world has to offer today.' But unfortunately, many people think that. So it's a matter of knowing who you are. Remember who you are and don't doubt yourself, because others will doubt you. But what matters is that you don't.”
