The band's last release of new material was the EP Dog's Blood, in 2010.

Canadian post-hardcore band Alexisonfire has returned after nine years with the previously unreleased track “Familiar Drugs.” The band's last release of new material was the EP Dog's Blood , in 2010.

In a statement to the press, the group justified the hiatus by saying that "it has been difficult to align schedules to write an entire album," as the band members are "entrenched in our own lives outside of Alexisonfire."

Speaking about the track, George Pettit, who took over vocals when Dallas Green left in 2011, explained that "Familiar Drugs" is about "recognizing that you need to make a change in your life."

Most people have something in their lives they can't let go of: substances, unhealthy relationships, lethargy, self-righteousness, a job they hate. "Familiar Drugs" is about choosing comfort over self-help.

In addition to the single, the group also announced some shows for the first half of the year, and every dollar raised from ticket sales will be donated to Indspire , a Canadian charity that invests in the education of Indigenous peoples.

The band's last full-length album was Old Crows / Young Cardinals , released in 2009; two years later, they ceased activities. In 2012 they performed a few shows, and in 2015, they officially returned.

It is not yet known if "Familiar Drugs" will be part of a new album. More information should be released soon. In the meantime, listen to the single below.
