George Floyd American man who was brutally murdered by a white police officer.
“Alexisonfire had several discussions about how we would respond to the murder of George Floyd and about encouraging discussions about racial inequality here and around the world,” the band wrote on Instagram.
Explaining the action, they wrote: “Last year we released a single called 'Complicit'. The song is about wanting to be an ally to people fighting for equality, but at the same time, recognizing that however pure our intentions may be, we are all complicit. We benefit from a system that is inherently rigged in our favor: a racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic system.”
The group said they are donating around $12,000 – approximately R$ 60,000 – which is all the money they've earned from the single so far. In addition, Alexisonfire will also donate the money they earned from the single's merchandise. Some of the organizations chosen by the band are the Canadian Civil Liberties Association , Black Lives Matter Toronto , and Black Youth Pathway to Industry .
The band concluded the statement with the following phrase: “The five members of this band are steadfast, yet imperfect, in their commitment to being better allies. We will destroy the pillars of the heterosexual and white patriarchy until its ruins become sand.”
Days later, the group announced another initiative. Now, Alexisonfire will also be selling raffle tickets for fans to win band memorabilia, such as the microphone stand that George Pettit broke during the recording of their recent single "Familiar Drugs." All the money raised from the raffle will also be donated to the aforementioned institutions and others, such as the NIA Center for the Arts , The Bail Project , and Black Women in Motion .
