2019 began full of expectations. Fans of rock, heavy metal, and their subgenres are already preparing to hear new music from their favorite bands such as Dream Theater , Papa Roach , Bring Me The Horizon , Rival Sons , Overkill , and many more.

But beyond the new releases, this year also carries the weight of great albums that came before it. Ten years ago, Alice in Chains , Sepultura, Rammstein , Megadeth , and Mastodon released their work and made history in music.

To celebrate these releases, we've compiled a list of the eleven best albums of 2009. See the list below.

11. Grave Digger – Ballads Of A Hangman

The band's first album to feature two guitarists and their last with Manni Schmidt , Ballads Of A Hangman Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue 's "Where The Wild Roses Grow" .

10. Red Fang – Red Fang

Known for blending heavy metal with stoner rock, Red Fang debuted in 2009 with their self-titled album. Bryan Giles , Aaron Beam , David Sullivan , and John Sherman presented their work to the world and have since occupied a significant space in stoner and sludge metal.

09. Green Day – 21st Century Breakdown

According to lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong Green Day 's eighth studio album portrays the era of manipulation we find ourselves in today, whether by government, religion, or the media. Well-received by critics, the album was even compared to The Clash 's London Calling Rolling Stone reporter .

08. Alice in Chains – Black Gives Way To Blue

Black Gives Way To Blue was the band's first release without vocalist Layne Staley , who had passed away seven years prior. The album features William DuVall sharing vocals with guitarist Jerry Cantrell , who sang on most of the tracks.

07. Sepulchre – A-Lex

Three years after Iggor Cavalera's departure , Sepultura invited Jean Dolabella to take over the drums and released A-Lex , the Brazilian group's second concept album. The work was inspired by A Clockwork Orange , a book written by Anthony Burgess in 1962 and adapted for film by Stanley Kubrick in 1971.

06. Rammstein – Liebe Ist Für Alle Da

Rammstein 's sixth studio album broke sales records before its release, based solely on pre-order numbers. Considered one of the group's most commercially successful albums, Liebe Ist Für Alle Da even had tracks censored in some places, mainly in Germany, due to material deemed unsuitable for minors.

05. Lamb of God – Wrath

Nominated for two Grammys, the album Wrath received a mix of positive and negative reviews from the press at the time of its release. The positive reviews cited the change in sound as a sign of the group's maturation, without diminishing the importance of the elements they've carried since Ashes of the Wake (2004).

04. Dream Theater – Black Clouds & Silver Linings

The band's last album with drummer and founder Mike Portnoy , who left in 2010, Black Clouds & Silver Linings was Dream Theater to reach the top 10 of the Billboard charts and to this day remains the group's best-selling album in its release week.

03. Megadeth – Endgame

With lyrics inspired by Lord of the Rings and the crisis that occurred in 2007 and 2008, Endgame was the band's first work with guitarist Chris Broderick Glen Drover 's departure , and the last with bassist James LoMenzo , who was replaced by original member David Ellefson . The album entered several Billboard charts and was very well received by critics, who considered it one of the band's strongest works.

02. Slayer – World Painted Blood

Slayer's 11th studio album was the last to be recorded with the band's original and classic lineup; drummer Dave Lombardo was subsequently fired, and in 2013 guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed away. In addition to receiving excellent reviews from the press, World Painted Blood achieved top positions on the music charts.

01. Mastodon – Crack The Skye

Mastodon 's fourth studio album , Crack The Skye, was listed as one of the best albums of that year on several specialized websites. Featuring seven tracks, the album marked the band's first release with drummer Brann Dailor as one of the vocalists.
