Trigger warning: sensitive content ; sexual violence
In her new documentary, Jagged , an HBO , Alanis Morissette makes a shocking and disturbing revelation about a period in her adolescence when she suffered a "gang rape," apparently orchestrated by men older than her.
The violence allegedly occurred early in Morisette's career, when she was only 15 years old – one year younger than the legal age of sexual consent in Canada (16). “I needed years of therapy to even admit that there was any kind of victimization on my part,” the singer confides in the documentary. “I always said I had consented and then I was reminded, ‘Hey, you were 15, nobody gives consent at 15.’ Today I think, ‘Oh yeah, they were all pedophiles. It was gang rape.’”
Alanis also revealed that she discussed the incident with several people, but the matter "fell on deaf ears" and she received no support. The artist chose not to mention the names of her abusers or go into details about the abuse.
The documentary Jagged on September 14th, but there are rumors that Alanis Morissette may not attend the event, apparently due to some disagreement with director Alison Klayman – although no further clarification has been given.
