Tom Hamilton , bassist for Aerosmith , gave an interview to Guitar World , where he revealed that the sudden retirement of Steven Tyler , the band's frontman, due to a serious vocal cord injury, surprised everyone, but did not discourage him.
Despite having information about the severity of Tyler's vocal damage, who fractured his larynx during a performance on the 'Peace Out' farewell tour in September 2023, Hamilton still had hope for a possible recovery for the vocalist.
"It's not the first time he's been injured during a show and managed to recover. I know how hard he tried to get back on the road, but it just wasn't possible," he revealed.
In a positive scenario, the tour was scheduled to restart on September 20th of this year, but it was canceled in early August with the news that Steven's vocal damage was irreversible .
Regarding this, the bassist commented on his reaction upon being informed about Steven's incurable vocal cord injury: “It was a punch in the gut to find out that our touring days are over. Maybe one day we can do something again, but it won't be a tour.”
However, even with Tyler's medical report, Tom Hamilton remains hopeful about Aerosmith's future. "I find it hard to believe we'll never play again. I've been surprised by things that have happened to this band too many times to think the future is closed," he comments.
While awaiting a possible reunion, Hamilton is exploring alternative avenues to continue his long career.
"As far as my career is concerned, I refuse to consider it over. There are many things we could do in the future. We'll have to see when we move from reactive mode back to creative mode," he concluded.
