The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) has released for the first time an official list of the most common first and last names registered in Brazil based on data from the 2022 Census – and rock stars were not left out.
Through the website Nomes do Brasil (Names of Brazil) , it's possible to search for any name and access the corresponding number of registrations across the entire country. Maria and José are the most common, but what's striking is the number of registrations with names of celebrities, such as Rihanna , Shakira , and even some of the most unique names in rock music.
According to the website, 175 Brazilians were registered with the name Axl (likely a reference to Axl Rose , vocalist of Guns N' Roses ), starting in the 90s and experiencing a boom in growth between 2000 and 2009. The name Ozzy (like that of the late Ozzy Osbourne ) was found 76 times in the searches.
The name Kurt , in turn, although it already appeared in Brazil long before the existence of Nirvana , saw an increase in registrations starting in the 1990s, when Kurt Cobain became more well-known, and experienced a growing trend, with 99 people registered between 2000 and 2009, and another 59 up to the year 2019.
The most registered name, however, is Alanis (referring to Alanis Morissette ), found in more than 4,000 people across the country, with increasing popularity between 1990 and 2009.
Some other famous rock and metal names were registered around Brazil on a smaller scale, such as Slash (25 people) and Angus (32 people). Others were already quite popular before, but experienced growth spikes after the emergence of rock stars, such as Joan (3,923 people) and Janis (986 people).
