When it comes to creating the perfect Cobra Kai episode, the soundtrack is almost as essential as karate, reports Entertainment Weekly . Classic or indie bands are always welcome choices, but in the case of Cobra Kai, AC/DC .
Poison , Ratt , Journey , Foreigner , and REO Speedwagon are some examples of bands that the popular Netflix show has featured. “I believe Mötley Crüe was written into the script,” said executive producer Jon Hurwitz . “But sometimes we write something into the script that we can’t afford. I mean, our fantasy is to have the kind of music budget that would allow us to have AC/DC nonstop and Bon Jovi and Guns N’ Roses .”
One AC/DC song in particular almost played a major role this season. “We had 'Thunderstruck' written into the script,” reveals Hurwitz. “We wrote 'Thunderstruck' into the script several times over the years, and we were never able to afford it at that time or make that choice [to spend the money on it].”
Initially, Hurwitz adds, he and the team thought there was no way to set the montage for any other song, but then Cobra Kai's music supervisor, Michelle Johnson , stepped in with different options that had the same feel. The winner: “Breakin' Outta Hell” by the Australian rock band Airbourne .
