One of Cradle of Filth is in the song "Her Ghost in the Fog."
There, the band criticizes not religiosity itself, but priests and all their lust. It tells a tragedy focused on an obsessive desire and shows the darkest side of humanity.
The song puts you in the perspective of a husband who lost his wife in a terrible crime.
"She was the most divine creature […]
Far beyond comparison
Lips in perfect harmony
I searched for her everywhere
Liquored black eyes"
The husband describes his wife's unparalleled beauty, which was indeed incomparable.
"She shone like a watercolor
Like a pearl in my little life
Until those who couldn't have her
Released her from this world"
Here is a prelude to what was to come. For where they lived, she was desired for her beauty, and some people who couldn't have her decided to take matters into their own hands.
"Setting reason aside
, or choosing death as an escape
, hypnotized they dragged themselves through the woods
, in that taffeta dress,
their hips swaying.
They prepared for everything...
They raped her and left her.
Five men of God!
Her ghost in the fog."
So, as described, five priests end up dragging the girl into a wood, raping her, and killing her.
And this song (which is from the year 2000) came out at the same time that several cases of rape and pedophilia by Catholic priests began to become public.
“She swore to me in vows of perfumed blood
We will never be separated
Unless envious heaven steals our hearts
Then I cried out
Come back to me
I was born in love with you
So why should fate stand between us?”
All the husband's revolt and despair at seeing his love gone, and much sooner than expected.
“For Erzulie she was endowed
With skin as white as milk
My porcelain half
A graceful angel of sin”
Erzulie is the spirit of love, beauty, jewels, dance, luxury and flowers…and that's how the husband saw his wife.
“Then I embraced her
Where lovers rot
Her ghost in the fog”
Finally, his mourning.
