Here at Wikimetal we've already discussed the importance of Nickelback for rock and metal fans. But many people still think they're a band of "melodic ballads".
To show that the band still carries much of the hard rock spirit, we've compiled a list of Nickelback's seven heaviest songs. It ranges from tracks about domestic violence to a tribute to Dimebag Darrell of Pantera .
7- “Animals” – All The Right Reasons
Starting with a metal-influenced guitar, "Animals" is one of those more sexual songs. Almost an adrenaline-fueled version of Whitesnake , about a couple who, well, are ready to begin an act forbidden to minors.
6- “Never Again” – Silver Side Up
Domestic abuse is a heavy subject in itself. Here, the band chose to address it from the perspective of a child witnessing their father abusing their mother. The instrumental track effectively conveys the seriousness of the topic and showcases the anger and frustration, including a powerful scream from vocalist Chad Kroeger .
5- “Bottoms Up” – Here And Now
Nickelback always tries to make very different songs from each other within the same album. It's as if they wanted to include both their most melodic and their heaviest songs on the same record. "Bottoms Up" is precisely that case with heaviness. A fun song with a strong hard rock influence.
4- “Million Miles An Hour” – No Fixed Address
There's always that perfect song to take you on a trip. Full of sound effects and distortions, "Million Miles An Hour" is upbeat enough for a party and trippy enough to satisfy a craving afterwards.
3- “Feed The Machine” – Feed The Machine
"Feed The Machine" is a political song, although Chad Kroeger stated that it was written before the Trump era, but it's precisely about blindly following leaders. Not only political leaders, but religious leaders or any other type of subservience that doesn't involve critical thinking. It's the opening track of the album of the same name and features distorted guitars, double bass drumming, and a strong influence from hard rock and metal.
2- “The Betrayal – Act III” – Feed The Machine
This track has a biblical feel and makes references to the journey of Jesus Christ until his death. It also deals with betrayal and, according to the band's vocalist, that's why the song is so heavy. "Nobody likes to feel betrayed." He stated that this was probably one of the heaviest songs they had ever written.
1- “Side Of a Bullet” – All The Right Reasons
"Side of a Bullet," from the album All The Right Reasons, is a tribute to Dimebag Darrell of Pantera. Vocalist Chad Kroeger called Vinnie Paul and asked for some material from the late guitarist. They then pieced together snippets of Dimebag's solos and created the song based on that. The solo in the track is actually Dimebag playing. Chad then showed "Side of a Bullet" to Vinnie Paul without him knowing it was a tribute. The drummer said, "You know what I want you to do? Write a song for my brother." It's definitely the heaviest track Nickelback has ever made.
