At the beginning of quarantine, many people made a promise: I'm going to use this time at home to discover new films. However, the reality for many was rewatching the same favorite productions thousands of times, right? Fortunately, this list of seven great films that celebrate heavy metal, compiled by Sala Crítica , might inspire you to try again.
Rockstar
(2001) The list begins with the film Rockstar , directed by Stephen Herek and starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston . The production is a retelling of the career of none other than Judas Priest . The film tells the story of Izzy (who in real life would be Tim "Ripper" Owens ), the number one fan of the band Steel Dragon who becomes frontman after the original vocalist (in real life, Rob Halford ) is fired. Despite being a beloved film by many, Judas Priest was not happy at all that the production did not allow the band to have a say in the film, and that Bobby Beers' sexuality, playing Halford, was represented inappropriately.
Tenacious D – The Pick of Destiny
(2006) Comedy legend Jack Black stars in this hilarious film that tells the story of his character going to Los Angeles to form the greatest rock band of all time after having a vision in which none other than Ronnie James Dio advised him to do so. In the city of stars, JB meets KG ( Kyle Gass ), and together they discover and seek the Pick of Destiny, made from the tooth of the Devil, played by Dave Grohl , which makes any band reach stardom.
Lords of Chaos
(2019) The controversial film directed by Jonas Arkelund , musician and director of major music videos such as Madonna's "Ray Of Light," tells the story of the band Mayhem , founded in 1984 and a leading exponent of black metal in Norway. However, the band's story is not limited to its musical influence, but also to the macabre events that marked its career, such as guitarist Euronymous distributing pieces of vocalist Pelle "Dead" Ohlin's to the other band members, and taking a photo of his body after his suicide, which became the cover of the album Dawn of the Black Hearts . This film is definitely not for afternoon television , but only for those with a strong stomach!
Deathgasm
(2015) is a New Zealand comedy/horror film that follows Brodie, a teenage headbanger who goes to live with his conservative aunt and uncle after his mother is admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Making new friends, Brodie and they form the band Deathgasm, and after investigating the disappearance of legendary musician Rikki Daggers, they attempt to play sheet music found in his house, with one problem: anyone who hears the music played by Deathgasm transforms into murderous demons.
Metalhead – Changing Destiny
(2013) This thrilling Icelandic drama film tells the story of Hera Karlsdóttir, a girl who finds in metal a way to heal from the tragic death of her brother Baldur, and from the challenges she faces during her youth and adulthood.
Heavy Trip
(2018) This fun Finnish film tells the story of the amateur metal band Impaled Rektum who, after successfully delivering a demo to a producer at a prestigious heavy metal festival in Norway, have vocalist Turo Moilanen lie to his crush, Miia , that the band has been invited to the festival. As the lie grows, the band decides to go to the festival anyway, even though they weren't invited, and are accompanied by the rather unpleasant police.
Pop Redemption
(2013) is a French film that follows the unusual journey of the band Dead MaKabés , who are traveling to Hellfest Open Air for the last show of their career. However, they end up getting involved in a murder along the way and change their route to All You Need Is Love , a hippie festival near Hellfest. Some scenes from the comedy were filmed at the 2012 edition of the festival, when they played after Guns N' Roses .
