6 Reasons to Buy a Vinyl Record Instead of Downloading Music from the Internet

Imagine going to meet your idol and having nothing to bring that could be autographed? The artist will be happy to know that you legally purchased their digital music, but how would you get it autographed?

-Sound quality: regardless of the old debate about which has better sound between CDs and LPs, one thing is certain and perhaps unanimous: both are superior to digital formats. And vinyl still retains that organic sound; all you need is a good turntable, receiver, and speakers, and voila! Listening and enjoyment are more than guaranteed! And it doesn't even have to be the new 180-gram vinyl records, which are even superior to past generations in terms of sound. The old ones are already a guarantee of good enjoyment.

-Graphic Art: once again entering the discussion of the advantages of other formats, let's face it, that LP cover with large, more detailed artwork far surpasses the equivalent on CD and even the digital format in those files where they are made available, including those in high definition. It's one thing to look at it on a computer monitor (however good the resolution is), it's quite another to see the vinyl cover in your face, not to mention the insert. An indescribable pleasure.

Bonus Tracks and Other Surprises: In order to stimulate sales and knowing the compulsion of collectors, today record labels are taking the opposite approach to that adopted in the transition from LP to CD, when they offered bonus music on CDs to encourage the purchase of compact discs. Today, record labels are doing the reverse and offering even more incentives than before: they include bonus tracks on vinyl, offer legal codes to download digital material for those who want to listen to it on iPod, iPad, smartphone, computer, etc., and even access codes to their websites or the band's official websites to offer exclusive material to vinyl holders.

The artist will be happy to know that you legally purchased their digital music, but how do you get it autographed? Well, if you have at least a vinyl record, many are willing to autograph it with a smile on their face.

-Price: I know this part will generate controversy, and I'll warn you: the advantage only applies to used records and not to new releases that are ridiculously expensive. You know that used record store in your neighborhood or even downtown that you don't care about? Sometimes, records you'd like to have on CD or even via iTunes, which are very expensive, are stuck there, just waiting for a buyer to come along and take them to a new home. And if you're lucky, you might end up buying others with the money you would have spent on a CD or a digital release from an online store, and you might even find them in excellent condition. And you know what's even better? If the author has already earned copyright on it, at least you won't be harming them if you choose this purchase over an illegal download. Think about it!

-Resale product: let's imagine that you later regret buying a vinyl record. It can happen, but we hope not, and you decide to pass it on. Selling a physical vinyl record is one thing, selling something virtual is another. Would anyone in their right mind buy a digital download that you acquired? It makes no sense. But the LP…
