Tool has been confirmed as an act for Lollapalooza Brazil 2025. This is the band's first time in South America. But its leader, Maynard James Keenan , has already been here with two other bands he's part of, A Perfect Circle and Puscifier . Both performed at the 2013 edition of Lollapalooza.
The band, founded in the 90s, has always cultivated an aura of mystery and sophistication. It consists of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, Adam Jones on guitar, Danny Carey on drums, and Justin Chancellor on bass. Despite long hiatuses, they maintain a loyal fanbase. They went thirteen years without releasing an album, only releasing their fifth album, Fear Inoculum, While we wait for their concert, we've listed some interesting facts about the band.
Jiu Jitsu
Tool's connection to Brazil goes beyond music. Maynard has practiced Jiu-Jitsu for years, his master being the Brazilian Luís "Limão" Heredia. He recently earned his black belt in the sport and celebrated in an Instagram post
Streaming platforms
Tool was one of the last major bands to put their catalog on streaming platforms. Until 2019, anyone who wanted to listen to the band needed to own the CD or vinyl. Shortly before the release of their fifth album, the band made their catalog available. At the time, Maynard made the humorous statement: “Our obsession and dream is a world where the dominance of BetaMax and LaserDisc has ended. It’s time to move on. But don’t be afraid. There’s something totally new that we think you’ll really like. It’s called digital downloads and streaming. Get ready for the future, folks!”
Furthermore, the lyrics are never included in the album booklets. They believe that reading makes people think, and they want them to simply feel the music. They are usually released online some time after the album's release.
The Fibonacci sequence
The lyrics of the song "Lateralus" from the album of the same name, if mapped syllabically, follow the numerical pattern of the famous Fibonacci sequence. The sequence is a series of numbers where each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers. Fibonacci numbers are prevalent in nature: in pine cones, in the arrangement of leaves, in the center of a sunflower, and in countless other places. But fans took this reference so seriously that they applied the Fibonacci sequence to the entire album, rearranging the songs in a different order and defining it as The Holy Gift .
The sound effects
In several of their songs, Tool uses unconventional sounds. For example, in the track "Disgustipated," the sound heard is of band members smashing pianos with a sledgehammer and shotgun fire. In "Mantra," the sound comes from Maynard playing with his cat.
April Fool's Day jokes
The band often plays pranks on its fans on April 1st. Back in the 90s, they released a statement saying the band had been in a bus accident in Australia and would be canceling their American tour. After some fans contacted the authorities, MTV released a statement to let them know everyone was okay.
At the time of the release of Lateralus, there were rumors that after Maynard found Jesus, he wouldn't finish the album. The joke was a reference to the conversion of a former member of the band Korn. And after some journalists reported it, they explained the joke. Ultimately, the fans are so used to the jokes that they renamed the day April Tool's Day.
The influence of occultism
All members of the band have an attraction to the occult, and this influence is noticeable in several songs and music videos. The seven-pointed star and the tree of life frequently appear in concerts and on album covers. But drummer Danny Carey takes this very seriously, even maintaining a collection of books and rare items related to Aleister Crowley .
