The instrumental rock trio Macaco Bong released their ninth album, Live Garage . Featuring only 5 songs but a 40-minute runtime, the band reinvented themselves in a work that incorporates metal influences and intense riffs.
For founder and guitarist Bruno Kayapy , the great differentiator of this album is the intensity of the trio's raw energy, which was preserved in the recording. Here, we've gathered 4 reasons why you should listen to the new album, Live Garage.
Influence of heavy metal
In an exclusive interview with Wikimetal , Bruno commented that his main influences have always been from the world of metal. "The formation of the band with Igor and Marcus directly contributed to the sound of this album; we grew up together since our adolescence in Cuiabá listening to heavy music."
"I personally went to many national metal shows from that era; it was my musical cradle throughout my pre-adolescence in the 90s. Bands like Krisiun, Headhunter DC, Ophiolatry, Funeratus, Descerebration, Mystifier, Sarcófago, Sanatório, Rebaellium, Holder, and many others from the late 90s generation."
Live sound
For the first time, the trio, formed by Bruno, Igor Carvalho (bass) and Marcus Fachini (drums), are experiencing on the album the same thing they do on stage. “Over almost two decades as a band, I started to better understand the feedback about how our live show is absurdly superior to the recordings you hear on the albums,” Kayapy said.
“The experience of being present at a Macaco Bong show is totally different from the experience of listening to a record. This is the band's first album that prioritizes this aspect of the live sound of our shows – hence the concept of 'Live'.”
Important and current themes in song lyrics
During the interview with Wikimetal , Bruno also talked about the theme behind the songs and explained a bit about the subject.
“'Carranca' [the album's first track] is about when you need to protect yourself from the evil eyes and envy of others, and especially avoid bad people crossing your path. 'Uveitis' is a rare eye disease; I had uveitis in my left eye when I was 8 years old and almost went blind in both eyes. 'Vá' doesn't need much explanation, right? 'Trabalho Forçado' is a title that, for me, sums up very well who we are… 'É' talks about giving yourself to a cause, throwing yourself headfirst into what you love to do most; it's just to give you a boost, for me it's that situation of focusing on yourself.”
The album's sequel promises a heavy sound
The band is planning a follow-up to the album. In 2023, a second volume of Live Garage will be released. According to the trio, the sequel will consist of a selection of songs from the band's entire career catalog, re-recorded in the same format that prioritizes "live" energy, and will also include a new, unreleased track.
