Rolling Stone 's lists are recognized in the music scene for the publication's editorial value, but they also always generate discussion among the general public. In its selection of the 200 greatest singers of all time, the magazine chose 17 names from rock and metal – and some may surprise you.
The selected rock and metal names range from John Lennon and Paul McCartney to Ronnie James Dio and Ozzy Osbourne , not forgetting iconic voices like Freddie Mercury , Janis Joplin and Rob Halford ; the list has an order of magnitude that will not always please fans.
The criteria for the list didn't just analyze vocal ability, so it's not a list of the "best voices," but rather of the best vocalists. "Talent is impressive, genius is transcendent. Of course, many people on the list were born with perfect pitch and limitless range. Others possess rougher, stranger, or more delicate vocal instruments," explained Rolling Stone .
